10 Tips to Reduce Allergens in Your Home

Managing the environmental factors that can trigger allergies and asthma symptoms can help make life a little easier for those who suffer from chronic respiratory problems. What better place to start than in your home:

1.  Reduce dust mites and mold by keeping your home's relative humidity levels (RH) below 50% in winter. Avoid running a humidifier.
2.  Vacuum regularly using a HEPA filter and dust often with a damp cloth.
3.  Avoid upholstered furniture, fabric and carpeting in bedrooms. Also blinds and heavy curtains collect dust and should be avoided.
4.  Choose bedding made from synthetic materials - not down or feather.  Wash frequently in hot water (above 130 degrees F) and dry using a high setting.
5.  Turn off your HRV unit when pollen levels are high. Pollen counts are highest between 5am to 10am so if you must open your windows do so after mid-morning.
6.  Avoid houseplants as they may have mold in the soil.
7.  Wash or replace moldy shower curtains.
8.  Eliminate theses from your home: cigarette & tobacco smoke, wood fires, scented candles, room fresheners, scented & aerosol cleaning products, pets (if you must have a pet, keep it out of your bedroom and living areas).
9.  Clean any areas showing signs of mildew or mold. Use 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water.
10. Ensure your furnace filters are properly maintained. If air ducts are dirty, have them cleaned.
